Our Work
The SMART reading program helps kids become confident readers by providing individual volunteer attention and new, take-home books. SMART is a statewide organization with a staff of 34; 15 of them working out of a state office in Portland and 19 stationed in field offices across Oregon. The organization’s annual budget is $2.6 million. Annually, SMART provides reading support and encouragement to 7,700 children, with the assistance of 5,000 volunteers in more than 235 schools and related sites in 27 counties.
The Job
This is a unique position that requires both “big picture” thinking and financial leadership and the ability to manage the day-to-day activities of a number of activity areas. Key responsibilities include financial planning, budget management, human resource administration, and operations oversight. The Director is a member of the organization’s senior management team and is supported by one direct report in the accounting functions and thru peer interactions around technology and information management.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who has a minimum of five years experience in both a management-level position as well as hands-on, day-to-day accounting-related work. A bachelor’s degree in an applicable field is required; a master’s degree or CPA is highly preferred. Additional requirements:
- Working knowledge of manual and automated accounting systems; experience with ACCPAC preferred
- Excellent math and financials analysis skills, with emphasis in accuracy and precision
- A strong track record of management skills and experience (both up and down within an organization)
- Truly outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Attention to detail and strong time-management and organizational skills
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with colleagues
