Each week during the school year, thousands of Oregon children wait eagerly for their SMART volunteer to share a fun experience with books and reading. SMART’s unique program, blending early childhood reading support and adult mentoring, provides the one-on-one attention many at-risk children need to gain reading skills and self-confidence. Each child also receives two books each month to take home and keep to inspire a love of reading outside the classroom.

But, we cannot do this alone.

SMART is funded almost entirely by private donations from foundations, businesses, and individuals. Less than 10 percent of our funding comes from government sources. A donation to SMART ensures we can recruit, train, and manage our statewide network of more than 5,000 volunteers while providing vital reading support and getting books into the hands of kids who need them most.
