Director of Finance and Administration – Portland
SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) is the state’s largest volunteer-based nonprofit literacy organization. SMART partners with schools around the state and engages community volunteers to read one-on-one with nearly 11,000 PreK through third-grade children annually, helping strengthen literacy skills and encourage a love of reading. Participating children also receive new books each month to keep and read with their families. In the past 25 years, we have served nearly 200,000 children, with the support of 130,000 volunteers and have given away over 2.5 million books.
The Director of Finance and Administration is a strategic thought-partner and a member of the organization’s Executive Team. The Director leads and manages the following areas: finance, budgeting, benefit administration, HR policy administration, and IT. The Director also manages or assists with special projects on an as-needed basis, and liaises with other departments and area offices. This is a hands-on position, requiring an ability to handle day-to-day accounting duties, as well as the financial planning activities for the organization. In the Human Resources Department, the Director plays a critical role in recruitment, retention, and professional development of staff, including helping to establish policies and practices that support a vibrant, equitable work culture and engaged staff team.
- Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner;
- Develop financial recommendations for the Executive Director, the Board and Finance Committee for current and potential program activities. Manage and maintain all financial statements; ensure monthly reconciliation of all accounts.
- Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with ED and Executive Team;
- Update and implement all necessary business policies, accounting practices and internal controls, with a focus on continual process and practice improvement.
- Support statewide fundraising team, including regional staff, with financial information and reports in support of SMART’s fundraising goals.
- Administer all employee benefits; manage all benefit-related contracts and vendor relationships.
- Support best practice human resource policies and processes related to recruitment, retention, and development of staff.
- Serve as point of contact for legal issues impacting the organization; act as liaison with professional community (attorneys, accountants, etc.)
- Oversee organization’s IT structure, hardware, and software in coordination with internal systems management staff.
Required Education and Work Experience
- Relevant four-year degree or equivalent experience in Accounting/Business; MBA or CPA preferred;
- At least 5-7 years of professional experience, ideally with broad financial, operations management, and human resource emphasis
- Strong financial analysis capabilities, along with ability to translate financial concepts to programmatic and development colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
- Successful track record in setting priorities, keen analytic, organization and program-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to advancing SMART’s work to address inequity.
