To our SMART Family:

We want to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and support to SMART’s strong and diverse network of community members across the state.

We’ve heard from a number of our school partners about recent incidents of bullying and harassment within their schools. These incidents have prompted many educators to make statements about the importance of inclusion and tolerance. As we are guests and partners inside our schools, we wanted to share this Oregon State Board of Education statement for your reference.

Together, we share the responsibility of creating a safe space for students, their families and their communities. We want everyone to feel secure, welcome and respected in our program. To that end, SMART is deeply committed to a diverse and inclusive community that respects and honors multiple perspectives and identities, and does not condone or tolerate discrimination of any kind.

As changes unfold around us, what remains unchanged is our commitment to inspiring a love of reading and learning in all children. We know you believe in our mission as deeply as we do, and we’re grateful for your support.

Thank you for all you do for SMART,

Chris Otis, SMART Executive Director                                         Peggy Maguire, SMART Board Chair
