The SMART Youth Advisory Board (YAB) is composed of 44 teen leaders, representing four area high schools, who volunteer their time to support the SMART programs in Klamath and Lake Counties. The YAB has helped SMART through increasing literacy awareness, local fundraising, and expanding SMART’s literacy services to hundreds of additional children in the Klamath Basin.

In 2011, the SMART YAB has donated more than 3,960 hours to SMART by serving as volunteer Readers to children who need literacy support and a positive role model in their lives, they dressed as super heroes and signed autographs at Superhero Saturday book fairs. They organized silent auctions, solicited financial support to buy books critical to SMART’s mission, stuffed mailings, and cleaned up after many pancake breakfasts and soup suppers. They authored skits and songs to recognize the hundreds of community members who share their time as volunteer Readers to the children SMART serves. They spoke on radio shows in support of SMART and asked friends, neighbors, civic leaders, businesspeople, teachers and family members to attend SMART community meetings and to encourage all to learn more about the rewards of volunteering.
