How SMART Reading Promotes Equity

Together with our network of 5,000 volunteers, SMART Reading is committed to changing the story when it comes to the education gap in Oregon. We do this by:

Creating a welcoming, culturally affirming reading experience. The next slide includes strategies for how you can support a student’s individual needs.
Providing diverse “mirror and window” books. Also known as culturally relevant books, “mirrors” allow readers to see images and reflections of their own lives, and “windows” allow readers to see the lives of other people.
Cultivating strong community partnerships and focusing our services to create a more equitable landscape for literacy in Oregon.
